RUN FOR NYC KIDS IN NEED! #FYI5K

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a virtual 5K?
A virtual 5K is a race that can be run at any location. We can't gather in Riverside Park as usual due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Instead, we will all run 3.1 miles on our own at a time and location that is convenient for you.

Can I finish a 5K?
Of course! One of the reasons that the event is a 5K (3.1 miles)  is so that we can have the broadest participant base possible. That makes the event more fun and raises more money for our mission. If you haven't trained, you might want to check with your doctor before running a 5K. However, you can walk or run at your leisure.

Can I walk the course?
Yes! Approximately 50% of our participants are walkers and walking is a great way to participate with a whole group of friends and with younger participants.

Can I run with a partner?
If you plan on running with a partner, we recommend that you follow NYC Health's COVID-19 prevention guidelines, which include wearing a face covering that covers your face and mouth at all times; avoiding physical contact; and washing your hands often.

Is there a minimum amount of fundraising I must do?
Yes. There is a low mandatory minimum fundraising level of $200. Most participants easily raise more and we know you can too. We provide you with the tools to make fundraising easy (your own web page, sample e-mails, social media integration, fundraising tips, etc). Don't worry; we've got your back.

How do I earn extra participation points?
Participation points are awarded through a variety of ways: (1) Recruiting other participants to join the 5K. You can invite friends to participate by clicking the "Invite friends to join you" tab in "Manage My Page." (2) Participating in activities. You can complete activities in the "Complete Activities" tab in "Manage My Page." (3) Raising money! Each dollar you raise converts to 1 point.

Are there any awards given out after the event?
Yes. Everyone who participates in the Virtual 5K will receive a finisher medal which will be mailed to your home. Additionally, FYI will give out prizes to the top fundraiser and the participant with the highest amount of participation points.

How much of the money that I raise goes to your organization?
100%. The Generosity Series that hosts the event does not charge the organization any processing fees or commissions (as with any online credit card transaction, our credit card company charges a small processing fee). So raise as much as you can because you can be sure that every penny is going to FYI.
